Europe Chapter Reports

Key Points of Periodic Report (September - November 2025)

Currently, the Chapter consists of 7 elected members and 31 active associate members who are based throughout Europe. We have monthly calls including elected and associated members to organize our work, to which all ISEE members are invited to participate.

The Chapter is led by co-chairs Elaine Fuertes and Rajini Nagrani.

  Chapter Leadership:

Our Chapter continues to hold monthly calls with both elected and associate members to coordinate activities, and we encourage all ISEE members to participate. Furthermore, we maintain an active ISEE Europe website to keep our members informed of upcoming events and key activities.

Overview of recent chapter activities:

 Elections

Three candidates stood for the two elected member positions this Fall.

  • Elected: Rajini Nagrani (re-elected, continuing as co-chair) and Daniela Fecht (Imperial College London, UK).

Ana Vicedo Cabrera rotated off as an elected member but will remain involved as an associate member.

New associate members of the ISEE Europe council: Yanding Wang (Helmholtz Munich, Germany), Lucia Palandri (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy), and Stevan Savic (University of Novi Sad, Serbia).

ISEE Newsletter Contributions

  • ISEE Young
  • EU Ambient Air Quality Directive
  • Activities in Eastern and Southeastern Europe

We also released a newsletter in Autumn specific to the ISEE Europe chapter (November release), which included updates on webinars, elections, membership rate changes, and ISEE 2026 planning.

Launch of the ISEE Europe Chapter Website

The new ISEE Europe Chapter website has been launched with an updated design and features.

Climate and Health Webinar Series

The Europe Chapter, together with the North American Chapter and the Students & New Researchers Network, organized a successful three-part webinar series:

  1. New evidence on Climate Change and Health – Session 1 (October 10): 400+ registrations, 100 attendees. Speakers: Robbie Parks (Columbia University, USA) and Antonio Gasparrini (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK)
  2. Climate Change & Mental Health (November 6): 200 registrations, 79 attendees. Susan Clayton (College of Wooster, USA), Daniella Watson (Imperial College London, UK) and Qingyang Zhu (Emory University, USA)
  3. Communicating Climate Change Risk (November 24): 135 registrations with 52 attendees. Speakers: Kurt Straif (Boston College, USA, and Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Spain) and George Thurston (NewYork University, USA).

Climate and Health Advocacy

The Chapter continues to monitor and engage in high-level climate and health developments, including the adoption of the Global Action Plan at WHA78, engagement in SB62 and participation in COP30. Several of our members are highly involved and support ISEE’s contributions to these platforms, in close collaboration with the Policy Committee.

Please identify how your recent activities have related to ISEE’s Strategic Plan:

The Europe Chapter’s recent activities strongly support ISEE’s 2025–2028 Strategic Plan by enhancing member engagement through well-attended SIG meetings, a successful three-part Climate and Health webinar series, and the launch of the updated Chapter website. Contributions to the 100th ISEE Newsletter and the Fall ISEE Europe Newsletter improved communication and dissemination of environmental epidemiology research, while ongoing advocacy efforts, including engagement with WHA78, SB62, COP, and the Belem Health Action Plan, advance ISEE’s policy and civic engagement goals. The Chapter also promoted capacity building and DEI priorities through active support for reduced membership fees for Eastern and Southeastern Europe, new associate member appointments, and continued efforts to strengthen regional research and training opportunities, aligning closely with the Society’s goals on education, inclusiveness, and global outreach.

Planned activities and goals for the coming year:

  • Continued involvement of multiple Chapter members in the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and Scientific Organizing Committee (SOC) for ISEE 2026.
  • Collaboration with ISEE 2026 conference organizers in Munich to develop a half-day workshop highlighting work in Southeast and Eastern Europe.
  • Further strengthening of advocacy links with NGOs, clinical societies, and patient groups.
  • Continued promotion of research and capacity-building activities in Southeast and Eastern Europe.

Please provide an assessment of your chapter spending, and planned expenditures for the rest of the year:

We have spent the remainder of last year’s Chapter budget for supporting conference registration plus next year's ISEE membership fee for two members. For the current year, we anticipate spending on:

  • Scholarships to support ISEE members from Southeast and Eastern Europe to attend relevant events
  • Zoom licensing costs for the Climate and Health Webinar Series (co-organized with the North American Chapter and SNRN)

Additional spending priorities will be discussed during the December Chapter meeting.
